How to Acid Wash Jeans

Posted on: August 17, 2011

The 80's are back with a vengeance, and acid washed jeans were one of the quintessential fashion trends of the decade. Sure, you can purchase your retro denim from expensive designer retail stores, but you can also "eighties-ify" your clothing at home if you like to be creative. If you would like to know how to acid wash jeans at home, then this page is for you.

  • Before you get started on your favorite pair of jeans, you may want to run a test wash with a pair that you no longer wear, just so you can get some practice and learn what to expect. Shorts or a denim skirt will also work--anything that you don't mind ruining in a first attempt, should anything go wrong. Once you feel good about your skill at acid washing, you can get to work on your coolest jeans without worry.

Step 1: What You Need to Acid Wash Jeans

Here's what you need for a quality acid wash effect:

  1. A pair of jeans or other denim clothing
  2. Porous pumice stones, like the kind you would use on your feet for a pedicure.
  3. Chlorine (contact your city for disposal requirements)
  4. Latex gloves
  5. An industrial washing machine (be sure it can handle washing pumice stones without damage)
  6. An antichlor such as sodium bisulfate (optional, but it will help get the bleach out when you are finished)

Step 2: Do the Acid Wash

  1. Put on latex gloves
  2. Keep chlorine away from any fabrics or other delicate materials
  3. Do not allow any pets or children near the chlorine
  4. Carefully pour chlorine into your sink (with drain stopped)
  5. Avoid inhaling fumes as much as possible
  6. Place pumice stones in the chlorine
  7. Allow pumice stones to absorb chlorine
  8. Drain the sink
  9. Place jeans and pumice stones into washing machine
  10. Remove gloves and wash hands thoroughly
  11. Wash for 20 minutes or so, or until desired color has been reached http://www.ehow.com/how_2302354_acid-wash-clothes.html

Alternative Method:

  • If you don't have an industrial washing machine or would like a simpler process, take a chlorine-soaked pumice stone and rub it over the jeans in the areas that you would like acid washed. Then wash the jeans thoroughly and dry.

Step 3: After the Acid Wash

  1. Make sure washing machine drains completely
  2. Add a small amount of antichlor to washing machine
  3. Place jeans in washing machine
  4. Wash for a full cycle
  5. You may want to wash again to make sure all chlorine and bits of pumice are removed
  6. Dry in a clothes dryer
  7. Your new acid washed jeans are ready to wear!
